AAAC Update December
2004
Since it was agreed that an affiliation between the ANC and AAAC
would probably be mutually beneficial we considered it was prudent
to provide a brief update of the activities of the AAAC to the
ANC on a regular basis (probably annually).
The AAAC meet twice a year, once in November
for a full day over a weekend and once in May for half a day. The
weekend meeting is always at a holiday destination with partners
and concludes
with a dinner on the Saturday night.
Over recent years much of the AAAC focus has
been on technical issues, particularly relating to the quality
of apartment buildings. However,
over the next few years we hope the focus returns to issues affecting
consulting businesses, such as finding and maintaining skilled
staff, Professional Indemnity insurance etc.
AAAC Membership
The growth in membership of the AAAC over recent years has been
a result of the increase in amount of acoustical work in Australia ,
and a reflection on the benefits, friendship and opportunity that
the Association provides to discuss matters with your peers. There
is currently a requirement for each regional office of the same
consultancy to join separately and also smaller consultancies continue
to join our membership.
AAAC Star Rating Guide for Apartments
This was primarily developed to inform developers,
builders and the wider community that there were options for
higher acoustic
performance of their apartments above and beyond the Building Code
of Australia. The Guide has been well regarded by some developers
and also some local Councils. A copy can be downloaded from
our website, click on our logo at the end of this item to go there.
Building Code of Australia (BCA)
Update May 2004
Over recent years the Building Code of Australia
has been considering an update to the acoustic requirements (Part
F5). Overall,
this has significantly improved the acoustic requirements, made
it clear that there is a difference between a laboratory and field
test and now includes requirements for impact isolation. The
AAAC provided significant input to these changes.
Australian Standard
EV16 Wind
Turbine Noise
A draft Standard was released early this year
to outline a process for measuring and assessing the effects
of wind turbine noise. This
has been based on review of other national and international Standards.
NSW Environmental Criteria for Road
Traffic Noise (ECRTN)
The NSW Department of Environment & Conservation (DEC) are
proposing to update their Guideline on Traffic Noise Criteria. The
AAAC made a submission during the request for public comment.
NSW Department of
Environment & Conservation
(DEC) Construction Noise Guidelines
These Guidelines are being prepared at the moment
and it is expected that the AAAC will provide comment when public
review is requested.
Professional Negligence
A presentation by a professional negligence
lawyer on the importance of contracts was made at our mid year
meeting and was very interesting. The
AAAC will attempt to produce a template-style contract for members
to adopt. The ANC document will be reviewed in this process.
